They’re not quite ‘elite’, nor are they considered ‘top contenders’ but the
franchises that make up my ‘It Could Happen’ collection of NFL title hopefuls,
really do stand a chance of reaching and winning Super Bowl 45. Three more teams that are in my ‘It Could Happen’ grouping of teams are the
Cincinnati Bengals (+2500), Philadelphia Eagles (+1800) and the New York Giants
(+2500). Cincinnati will have to improve its pitiful 26th-ranked passing attack
– and avoid any more player arrests, but I’m not sure head coach Marvin Lewis is
over his ‘play it close to the vest’ style Cincinnati used last season, while
the Philadelphia Eagles will have to not only overcome the loss of longtime
quarterback Donovan McNabb, but also a rushing attack that ranked an
unimpressive 22nd last season and a defense that ranked 19th in points allowed. Do you want to get a 60%

Better yet, not only do each of these squads stand an outside chance of reaching
the big dance, but each of these teams is offering NFL gamblers an enormous
amount of value, particularly for teams that do have realistic hopes of playing
in Super Bowl XLV.
With that said, let me break down each team in this grouping and their
respective odds of actually reaching and winning this season’s Super Bowl title.
Tennessee Titans +3000 - The Tennessee Titans are hoping for big things in 2010 after seeing Vince Young
come in and lead the team to an 8-2 record over its final 10 games following a
pitiful 0-6 start under veteran Kerry Collins. In order to take a step forward
and contend for the AFC South division title, the Titans will need to improve
its 23rd-ranked passing attack but may not have taken enough steps to do as the
only addition the Titans made to its receiving core was wide receiver Damian
Williams with its second overall pick. Tennessee Titans also needs to shore up a
pass defense that had more holes in it than Swiss cheese last season. Tennessee
ranked a pathetic 31st against the pass and 28th in points allowed. The good
news for Titans fans and betting backers that love Tennessee is the fact that
Jeff Fisher’s team added veteran defensive end Jason Babin, cornerback Tye Hill
and linebackers Pago Togafau and Will Witherspoon in free agency, not to mention
drafting defensive end Derrick Morgan with the No. 16 overall pick in the draft
and making three more defensive selections between the third and fifth rounds. A
double digit win total and a playoff berth are most definitely not out of the
question.
Atlanta Falcons +2500 - The Atlanta Falcons will be looking to bounce back in the NFC South after
battling injuries to many of its key players last season including quarterback
Matt Ryan and starting running back Michael Turner. I like Atlanta’s explosive
offense and believe it will be even better than it was last season after
drafting two offensive linemen in the third and fourth rounds and adding young
fullback Dan Klecko in free agency. Where the Falcons really need to improve is
on the defensive side of the football where they ranked an unimpressive 21st
overall last season and a pitiful 28th against the pass. To this end, the
Atlanta Falcons added linebacker Sean Witherspoon with the 19th overall pick in
the draft while also acquiring a starting cornerback in veteran Dunta Robinson
while also adding veteran defensive back Matt Giordano and defensive tackle
Corey Peters in the second round of the draft. Call me crazy, but I believe the
Falcons will definitely challenge New Orleans for the NFC South division title
at the very least.
Miami Dolphins +3000
- The Dolphins have talked the talk about being a playoff team and legitimate
Super Bowl contender in the AFC, but I think they may be getting ahead of
themselves a bit, particularly since they reside in the same division as the
Jets and Patriots. Miami ranked fourth in rushing last season, but in order to
reach the postseason and have a shot at winning the Super Bowl, Miami must
improve its dismal 20th-ranked passing attack under young quarterback Chad Henne.
The good news for Dolphins backers is the fact that Miami added top-tier wide
receiver Brandon Marshall in free agency and two veteran guards in Cory Procter
and Richie Incognito that will help improve the team’s already solid offensive
line. I also love Miami’s additions of play-making linebacker Karlos Dansby and
respected defensive coordinator and former 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, but I’m
not sure just yet as to whether the young Miami Dolphins will be able to come
together fast enough to improve its uninspiring defensive statistics from one
season ago. Miami also acquired veteran linebacker Tim Dobbins and drafted
defensive linemen with its first two picks in the draft while using five of its
first six picks overall on defensive players.
New York needs to get back to playing power football offensively after falling
to 17th in rushing last season while definitely improving a pass defense that
ranked 30th in points allowed (26.7 ppg). In spite of their shortcomings, each
of these ballclubs has a legitimate shot of posting a winning record and
challenging for their respective division titles if not more.
