The Phillies’ offense is currently ice cold as they have scored 3 runs or less in five of their past six games for an average of just 2.7 runs per game. In fact, Philadelphia has gotten 6 or less hits in five of those six games and has averaged just 5.5 hits per game during this cold span which is a tremendous drop-off from their season average of 8.6 hits per game. Things are unlikely to improve tonight as my pitcher performance ratings predict a strong bounce-back effort from Washington’s Jason Bergmann who is coming off his worst start of the season when he allowed 10 runs versus the Mets last Wednesday. Despite that ugly result, Bergmann is still having a solid season and actually entered last week’s game with a 3.86 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with a 76-27 strikeout/walk ratio. My pitcher performance ratings also predict a strong bounce-back effort from the Phillies’ Joe Blanton who allowed 4 runs and 9 hits in just five innings versus the Dodgers last week. Despite that below average showing, Blanton has still pitched well since being traded by the Oakland A’s last month with a strong 2.37 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in his last three starts for the Phillies.
