Prior to this season the Tampa Bay Rays had a problem beating the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. My how things have changed. The Rays took game one of their three game series in Tampa last night to make it 5-2 in the season series.
Tonight they will send James Shields to the mound who owns one of those aformentioned wins against the Angels, to gurantee a win of the three game series. Shields was magnificent in a 2-0 Rays win over the Angels back in May at Tropicana field. He pitched a complete game one hitter while striking out eight. Shields has been outstanding at home all season. He is 7-1 with a 2.21 ERA in thirteen home starts with the Rays going 12-1 in those contests.
Ervin Santana will toe the slab for the Halos as he looks to continue his success on the road. But that could be a challenge tonight in a venue that has given him trouble in the past. In fact, his last three starts in Tampa have not been pretty as he has allowed a total of 18 earned runs in those contests. In five career starts against the Rays, he is 1-3 with an 8.16 ERA.
